Landlord in court over repair failures
A landlord has been ordered to pay thousands of pounds in fines for failing to carry out repairs at his rented property.
Kanthasamy Sothilingam neglected to carry out the necessary work on his rental property in Main Road, St Paul’s Cray, which he rented to a mother and her children.
It resulted in Bromley Council issuing an improvement notice detailing severe defects and deficiencies.
Conditions at the property were found to be so bad that the council had to rehouse the tenant family.
Councillor Kate Lymer, Executive Member for Public Protection and Safety, said: “We must make sure that rented properties do not present a hazard to anyone’s health or safety.
“Landlords must meet their statutory obligations and ensure their properties are let in a reasonable condition.”
Mr Sothilingam was charged at Bromley Magistrates’ Court where he was fined £1,000, ordered to pay £930.50 in costs, a £100 victim surcharge and court fees of £150.
